Times of India: Liberating Cinema in the Press

After garnering appreciation worldwide, Indrasis Acharya’s Pupa is going to be screened at Goldsmiths Literature Seminars at Goldsmiths, University of London. It will be a part of a special film series screening that is curated by Mina Radovic, founder and director of Liberating Cinema UK. Besides, there will also be a Q&A session with the director. The film will be screened on March 28 at a seminar room in Warmington Tower in the campus.

“It is a real proud moment for us. Though it had almost zero campaign and exposure in the market in spite of 12 wins and several prestigious selections. It’s a sheer pleasure to know that the University of London has invited me to screen Pupa at their Goldsmith literature seminar,” the director said.

Liberating Cinema aims to encourage debate and lively interactions between students, staff and scholars on a diverse range of cinematic works and topics.

With Kamaleshwar Mukherjee, Rahul, Sudiptaa Chakraborty and Pradip Mukherjee in the lead, Pupa narrates an emotional journey of a confused son. The character is tormented by the dilemma of keeping his job in the US and being by the side of his ailing father, who is in coma.

Interestingly, Indrasis had to fight to get his film released in India as it touches on subjects like euthanasia. Finally, the CBFC Mumbai office gave a U/A certificate (parental guidance for children aged 12 or below), and suggested attaching a disclaimer, mentioning that it doesn’t speak for mercy killing. It also recommended blurring the manufacturer’s label on a vial and syringe shown in Pupa.
