Liberating Cinema is partnering with The Jocelyne Saab Friends Association in order to restore, exhibit, and distribute the films of Jocelyne Saab.

A unique voice in the history of Arab cinema and documentary cinema of both the 20th and 21st centuries, Jocelyne Saab is a Lebanese filmmaker with a broad filmography of 47 films. Her work has been selected and praised at prestigious festivals, including Cannes, Sundance, Toronto, San Sebastian and Oberhausen, and her artistic practice led her to exhibit her installations and photography series across the world, from Singapore, UAE, Lebanon and Turkey to Libya, Spain, France, and the United States.

Jocelyne Saab began her career in images as a war reporter. She covered all the conflicts the Middle East in the 1970s-80s, from the first film about the Lebanon Civil War (Lebanon in Turmoil, 1975) to documenting Yasser Arafat’s departure from Lebanon in 1982. After working with Algerian filmmaker Farouk Beloufa and then German Volker Schlöndorff Jocelyne Saab begins directing her own film in Beirut, her beloved war-torn city. A Suspended Life is selected at Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight in 1985. Following this international success, she continues to direct documentaries and fictions well into the 21st century.

Her film Dunia (2006) gains considerable attention at Sundance and Toronto and rouses controversy, even attracting death threats to the filmmaker.  Awarded the Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters and Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters, Jocelyne Saab passed away on the 7th of January 2019 after a long struggle with illness.

Founded in February 2019 at the initiative of Nessim Ricardou-Saab, son of and copyright holder of the filmmaker, and Mathilde Rouxel, the Jocelyne Saab’s Friends Association works towards the valorization, broadcast and restoration of the work of Jocelyne Saab.
