The first film screening on the Balkan Peninsula took place on the luxurious Terazije Square in Belgrade, Kingdom of Serbia, on the 6th June 1896. Fifteen years later in Belgrade, on the 23rd October 1911 the first Serbian feature film The Life and Deeds of the Immortal Vožd Karađorđe (Čiča Ilija Stanojević, 1911) premiered to audiences at the Hotel Paris and to the Royal Court of His Majesty King Petar I Кarađorđević of Serbia, who would go down in history as King Peter the Liberator. 

Liberating Cinema is honoured to host the 110th Anniversary Symposium of the first Serbian feature film and has the great privilege to present His Royal Highness Crown Prince Aleksandar Karađorđević of Serbia as our Guest of Honour for this 110th Anniversary Symposium. The symposium will be held over Zoom on Saturday 23rd October 2021 at 10am UK – 11am Serbian time. HRH Crown Prince Aleksandar will speak about his ancestor and the Royal House of Karađorđević.

The Life and Deeds of the Immortal Vožd Karađorđe (Čiča Ilija Stanojević, 1911) is a poetic portrait of the eponymous life and deeds of Vožd Đorđe Petrović, better known as Karađorđe, the great leader of the First Serbian Uprising against the Ottoman Empire in 1804. We follow his life from his childhood to his death in 1817 and the historic events which he led. Karađorđe is the founder of the The Royal Dynasty of Karađorđević which more than two centuries later is present in the life of its homeland.
